I just want to respond to Kristen M.'s statements about dispensing heartworm preventative as I think this is what actually upset her. The state of Texas sets laws by which we have to follow. No veterinarian can legally dispense a prescription drug without first establishing a "doctor-patient relationship". This has been defined as an examination of the animal and a recording of their weight, temperature, and physical condition. This requirement is to protect the patient. Prescription drugs can have unwanted side effects. Heartworm preventatives are prescription drugs and can have unwanted side effects if the dog already has heartworms and so documentation of a negative heartworm test is required before this drug can be dispensed. We do care about our clients' pets and only want the best for them. We also abide by all laws of the state of Texas. Kevin Shurtleff, DVM
