From these posts I've read on-line by other patients (not on this site) it almost sounds like Dr. Millikan is a Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde. I got Mr. Hyde. My first trip to Dr. Daniel Millikan was two years ago. He put in a filling that had a sharp edge and left a big gap between my teeth. So I called and they had me come in and the hygienist smoothed the sharp edge. About the gap, she told me the only way to fix was to remove the filling and have the dentist try again. She cautioned me, though, that because of location of the filling there would be a spacer used between that tooth and the one next to it, and the gap may still be as large as it was currently because of the spacer he'd need to use. So I decided to see if I could get used to it, and I gradually got used to flossing every time I ate. Two years went by before I came in again yesterday (hey - life is busy and I just didn't have a chance) and the hygienist did a good job cleaning my teeth. She also asked if I was having any problems and I said, well, that gap is still a problem and sometimes I can't get all the food out and it gets infected. But I'd adjusted to it on the whole. She told me to talk to the dentist, so when he came in, I did. After I told him the gap was still catching food and getting sore some times, he glanced at the chart on the screen and said ""well, it couldn't be too bad for you to not bring it up for two years"". I told him I HAD brought it up, had come back in, and that the nurse had not been optimistic about it getting the gap any smaller. He reread the chart and said ""well, the nurse never would have said that, I could fix this filling just fine. But I'm not a lawyer and it's a matter of who do I believe?"" He was getting kind of agitated and angry at this point. He said that to not come in for 2 years is just making the situation worse"" and I said there's no change in the size of the gap since the filling was put in, and I didn't see the big deal in not coming in for 2 years. Which got me a lecture on how seeing a dentist is about prevention and it's my responsibility to come in more frequently. I wasn't saying much at this point - he was red in the face and it seemed as though I had really insulted him in some way. So he asked whether I wanted the filling replaced and I quietly said I don't think so, not wanting him to have sharp instruments in his hands anywhere near me. He then said that my concerns about this gap and what I had said were all ""hooey"" in his opinion, and I needed to find another dentist. He instructed the hygienist to finish up and get me out of the office and that he would not charge me today but he did not want me in his office again. He never told me the results of the xrays the hygienist took (she looked and said she didn't see any cavities) and hovered around the front desk until I was out of the building. It was a weird, almost frightening, experience to have that much anger directed at me with so little reason.\r
12/3/2010 update - he lied. He DID charge me - he sent the full bill to the insurance company and they paid before I could contest it. So now insurance won't cover another appt with a real dentist since it is within 6 months. Awful, awful, awful AND a liar.
