Review content:
This was my first visit to The Mexican Inn, a Fort Worth institution (but who wants to be an institution). I've always wondered why this place has such a bad reputation with Mexican people and young people. The decor was certainly nice, new, and attractive at the location I went to. The clientele was mostly white haired white people, which is almost always a sure sign that the food will be bland and won't be spicy, and usually a sign that has me heading for the door. The single sided menu let me know right away that there wasn't a lot to choose from. \r \r The chips and salsa arrived first. The chips were cut into long rectangular strips and looked freshly fried. They were quite good. The salsa was a major disappointment though. It was without a doubt, the worst salsa I've ever eaten in my entire life. It tasted like nothing but a blend of tomato sauce and tomato paste. The tangy, overcooked taste of the tomato paste was absolutely horrid. There was nothing fresh, tasty, hot, or Mexican about it. \r \r The food arrived next. Two cheese tamales with chile con carne and one beef tamale with chile con queso. The topping on the beef tamale had a real cloying processed cheese taste. The cheese tamales weren't much better. The rice was ok, but the beans had so much lard they were almost pure white. The best thing about the meal was the warm corn tortillas and the tasty iced tea. This experience was on par to a visit to Panchos Mexican Buffet which is about the the worst Mexican food it is possible to get outside of Taco Bell. Though admittedly, the Panchos salsa is better. I'd say avoid this place as there are far better Mexican food places that are actually Mexican in taste. Pros: Nice Decor Cons: Terrible salsa, bad food/
