Review content:
My boyfriend and I went to Lil Chef Cafe recently on a Sat. morning. First impressions: walking in, we were not greeted by the 3 people standing behind the counter. Awkward! Always weird when you walk into an establishment like a restaurant and are not greeted but rather stared at blankly. To be fair, one was a kid who looked about 10, the other maybe a high-school girl (who looked pretty vacant). Still, not sure why we weren't greeted with a ""Hello"" or ""Sit anywhere you'd like!"". So we grabbed an open booth. Table was not cleared yet; still had food sitting on it. Place wasn't super busy and is small so one waitress should be sufficient. A few minutes pass and the waitress comes to our table to clear it and give us menus and ask us what drinks we'd like-coffee, water, etc. The menu is fairly typical of a Coney Island and has a good selection of breakfast food. We ordered and while waiting overheard the booth behind us complain to the waitress about the service. She said something along the lines of, ""Well, I have a lot of duties besides waitressing. Sorry."" Um okay? Perhaps you need another waitress?! So what exactly is the h.s. school girl behind the counter doing? She wasn't bussing tables, cleaning up, or cooking...basically she could have been helping out with waitressing duties, but rather she seemed to be killing time hanging out behind the counter with her younger brother perhaps. After the people at the booth behind us left, I heard the waitress telling the h.s. girl about their complaining; yeah you might not want to do that within earshot of other customers! Later, the owner came out from the grill area to talk with the watiress and she was telling him about the people complaining and I actually heard him say ""I tell people, good food, bad service!"" What?! Well that about summed up Lil Chef Cafe perfectly. Good food just don't expect anything other than lackluster service (with barely a smile). Honestly I'd rather go get breakfast at the Griffin in downtown B. Creek, where I always know the waitress will greet us with a smile and friendly service (and the food is good too). Also there's no kids loitering around behind the service counter!
