I got a $15,000 quote from one contractor for a full finished bsmt. Then called G&K because Chris, the owner, had done brick paving work for me in the past & did a decent job. He told me he was licensed to do bsmts & would give me a good deal if I used him. I wanted to help out a polish fellow & his family & small biz owner, who in the winter months has less work & lives right in my community. He told me he would do the job better & for $13,500, this would include all materials. He began work Dec 2007 & said he would have it completed NLT my daughters Bday Jan. 20th. By Mar it still wasn't done & I had paid $14,000 plus spent over $700 for materials. Plus had given him $1000 worth of exercise equipment; Bought and/or made lunch for him & his workers who he pays under the table (& they were smoking in my home) & even gave them all fine liquor at xmas time. He called me his friend & told me he would do a better job than anyone else. As of July 3, 08, 7 mos later, my bsmt is still incomplete & he's not returning calls. He told us he didn't want to finish since his brick paving biz is in full swing. Most of the work was either done incorrectly, did not meet standard measurements, ie., wet bar, which he didn't complete, & lots of sloppy work, ie., shower stall that leaks, doors that don't shut, he even purposely saughtered off the sprinkler valve handle so the ceiling tile would fit, rather than properly turning it out of the way. The price was to include custom shelving in my storage area which he didn't do & 2 glass block windows, he only did one. When I pointed these things out to him, he said he would fix them, but instead made them worse rushing to get the job done. Finally he told us he wasn't going to finish the job. When we asked for some of our money back so we could hire someone else to finish it, he told us to get a quote, which we did. Now he's not returning our calls. We will be pursuing this matter in court. I do not recommend using Chris.
