Review content:
Save your money and paint it yourself. The owner dropped a guy off in the morning, did no prep work whatsoever just started free-hand painting, and the result? Not one straight line on the entire job. The owner actually blamed me saying it was my fault because I didn't tell him they should have brought materials (tape) to do the job right. I asked him that word for word, and he said yes.
Any good painter will tell you it takes longer to do the prep work than the actual painting. Because, you want the finished work to look right. If you do not tape the edges of the area you're painting, it won't come out straight. And it didn't.
You will get more excuses than straight lines. First, he said it was the texture as to why he couldn't use tape. I took him into the kitchen to show him (the owner) the bar my wife and I painted last year. Same exact texture on the wall and the same baseboard material that his guy was painting. The difference was we used tape and our lines came out straight. I said to him "our job looks a lot better than the one your man did, tell me I'm wrong?" He could not. What he did next was turn to more excuses. He began looking around to point out anything he could find wrong with the paint job done by the home builder. As though his defense now was, if they did a bad job, I can too. His next excuse was he was trying to save me money. So now apparently there are two prices (after the job is done) that he can do it for. One price will do it right and professionally, and one takes short cuts, no prep work, and will come out crooked. I didn't pay a discounted rate to save myself money, I paid in full, what he quoted me to paint the nursery for our baby who's coming in eight weeks. At no time did he tell me until he was finished and the job looked terrible, that he was going to try and save me money by not taking the time and prep the room he's painting. I paid in full his quote for painting our nursery, he took the money, then took short cuts and he knew it.
