Review content:
I had been to the European Bistro several years ago when it first opened and was impressed. So when I got an email about their Valentine's Day special, I thought it would be a unique dinner for us. We reserved early online and got a call back twice and confirmed our reservations by phone. It was much to our surprise then when we arrive for an early dinner at 6:30 that they had apparently been lost. After a half hour wait (along with several other couples) we were seated. It took an eternity to be served (2 hours in all) and the food was unremarkable. The appetizer a salmon pate' was served with too few bread sticks to really appreciate it. The cream of asparagus soup was good, but not outstanding. My lamb was overdone (the red cabbage was excellent) and my wife's salmon was palatable, but unexceptional even though the sauce was unusual. We had to ask to get our dessert and the bill was extraordinary with the gratuity already added in--an affront to our dining sensibilities--$258 for two people--we did have champagne to be fair. Interestingly people who order the steak seemed to be served much faster than other entrees. As the place was full, we assumed the owner made enough to pay for her next trip to Hungary. There was a definite shortage of wait staff (we counted 4 waiters for over 20 tables) and our waiter was doubling as the manager. The accordion player was very good--a bright spot of the evening and decor of the restaurant was definitely romantic and interesting. Our overall feeling--a ripe candidate for a "Kitchen Nightmare" episode. Pros: Decor and ambiance Cons: poor service, overdone or mediocre food
