All Eyes Are On You 1/26/2007

I recently went to have my eyes examined. It's been several years since I've had a complete eye exam and so on the suggestion of my doctor, I decided to get in and make sure everything was still a-ok. I decided to go see Dr. Matthew Madion after hearing really good things about him. The Madion name is well known in Traverse City and is usually preceeded by the letters Dr. (His father was an oral surgeon, his brother an OB/GYN etc) Dr. Madion practices at Grand Traverse Opthalmology Clinic. They have a large office. Large. When I walked in, it sort of reminded me of an airport holding terminal which I guess would give the impression that it was a little bit impersonal. While the front desk receptionist was extremely nice, my overall first impression was just that it was this huge holding tank of people waiting to see the doctor. The office is beautiful, don't get me wrong. It's got high tall windows, huge ceilings and is decorated in very neutral colors. Within that lobby area is also a retail area for purchasing glasses, contacts, etc. I had to fill out some paperwork and was actually still working on that when I was called back. The assistant who did all my preliminary testing was very nice and I felt very relaxed with her. She ran me through a series of tests and then put drops in my eyes (first the numbing drops to test for glaucoma and then the dilating drops). We then were escorted to a waiting room at the rear of the facility where I had to sit and wait for my eyes to dilate. While she told me it would take about 10 minutes for my eyes to dilate, I would say it was about 20 before I was taken back to a room and another 10 or so before the doctor came in. Dr. Madion came into the room and ran his series of tests. He was extremely efficient and quickly got me through the rest of my exam. I was then escorted back to the front to check out. There were two check-out "clerks" and they were both quite busy. Overall, I felt my experience was good. I might have preferred a more intimate setting, if you will, it was a bit big for my liking. However given the quality of care and the efficiency of the office, I think it more than made up for it.
