Colonial Springs Farm

Colonial Springs Farm 10/23/2006

We have gone to Colonial Springs Farm for pumpkin picking for the past eight years and we loved it until they started charging admission this year. It's only 1 dollar but when you have the kids with you, it adds up. Many people in line behind us where unhappy about this new practice and said "Admission for what? I just want to get a pumpkin!". You still have to pay for the pumpkins, which looked really bad this year. We only got 2 smallish ones and it cost over $15. What I really hate is that the admission booth where you first come in is also where you buy the tickets for the hayride and pony rides. It's either buy them then or go back on a long line later. I prefer the way it used to be, where they had a ticket booth for everything inside the place. So we bought pony ride tickets because my youngest loves horses and said she wanted to go, and then she changed her mind and my oldest son had to go instead not to lose the $5. I thought the poor pony's back was going to break. Speaking of them, one of the ponies was extremely skinny with ribs sticking out and didn't look well at all, poor thing. The hayride was kind of fun. It would be better if the driver let you know what you were seeing though, but it was ok. There is a section with a big slide, a train made up of barrels (that had a nest of yellow jackets in 2 of the cars until my husband told the kid who was running the ride. They went and got a can of bug spray, but at least they put signs that those seats were broken. Poor kids who sat there before my husband noticed the wasps coming out of the side of the seats!) a ride where you sit on a rope and slide down, overside trikes and a witch tunnel. The kids liked the activities here and I think the admission was $5 for each child, and you get 5 tickets. You have to use one for each of the activities. The porta-potties were disgusting. They didn't have toilet paper in any of them until someone went to complain. If you're going to start charging admission, maybe you better install some decent bathrooms. So it's a fun place for pumpkin picking, but we don't like it as much since they started getting greedy and charging admission. Be prepared to spend lots of money if you do anything other than pumpkin picking. more
