Something different. 10/21/2006

First time, I've had Afghani food in Philly. The restaurant is considered to be spacious in this city, but the decor was a little too ethnic for my taste. The food wasn't bad. We started with an appetizer of Sambosa Goushti, which are deep-fried pastries stuffed with ground beef, chick peas and spices, served with a vinaigrette sauce. Then I had a Kabuli-Palaw, which is seasoned chunks of chicken under a heap of spiced brown rice, topped with carrot strips, raisins, almonds and pistachios. My husband had a Badenjan-chalaw, which is pieces of lamb and eggplant cooked in a rich sauce of tomatoes, onions and spices, served with white rice. I thought his lamb was a little gamey and reminded me much of an Indian dish that I've had before. I liked my rice dish only the chicken was little dry, but I would say it was nicely seasoned. I would likely return to this place just because I get so tired of eating Italian in this city. more
