I just couldn't believe that our most famous attraction is not yet reviewed or mentioned on the St. Augustine page so I have to give a nod to our grand Castillo de San Marcos. It's a beautiful fort with weapons demonstrations every single weekend and ghost tours on the grounds around it every night. During it's 400 year history, it was never taken in a siege or battle, though sometimes peacefully conceded (as to the union during the civil war). The exterior walls are so intimidating from the ocean that the pirate attacks stopped as soon as the walls facing the ocean were built, even though the fort couldn't have done anything at that point. It is filled with fascinating stories and history that you can just picture. It's easy to get sick of having to go there with visiting family and friends who visit, but for someone who has never seen it, it is breathtaking.
