Remember this on the next beautiful day! 10/7/2006

A free ferry that leaves once an hour, on the half hour, takes visitors from the small information center across Matanzas inlet to Fort Matanzas, small but interesting and very well preserved. Its long history and short battle history is amazing and it's a great place to visit for a natural Florida experience. We witnessed the first manatee sighting of the year and snapped a few shots of him from the top of the fort. Even waiting at the covered, aluminum dock for the ferry to arrive, we could see very large, colorful fish idling below us in the crystal blue and calm waters on the intra coastal waterway. Hermit and ghost crabs scuttled along the narrow strip of beach and an occasional dolphin made his way to the sea right before us. A guide in costume will accompany you and your ferry driver and truly make history come alive, every fact being interesting. We weren't able to resist leaving a five in the donation box, because we felt we were getting too good a deal. If we had more, we would have left it. It's a beautiful and fun way to spend an afternoon, and is a great family experience. Please remember to travel the twenty minutes or so north on A1A from Saint Augustine and go on your next beautiful day off! more
