Not too terribly bad, but definitely not good 10/9/2006

I lived here for a year and just moved out in August. A previous reviewer stated that they are "spacious luxury apartments having underground parking". Well, this is partially true. The building that the office is in, is a very nice building, and that's where the underground parking is. The rest of the buildings are not as nice, and you get a single stall garage with your rental. If you have a roommate or a spouse with another car, and you'd like another garage stall, I think they'll let you pay some fee to have a second stall. Regardless, it was very nice to have a garage stall while we were there, especially during the winter. As for the apartment itself, it was indeed very spacious - my roommate and I got a 2 bedroom, 1 1/2 bathroom split level with a fireplace for $950/month. The cubboards and the closets were pretty crappy though; the closet doors wouldn't even stay on the hinges - they'd fall off all the time. The central air unit worked, but it was extremely LOUD. We had a balcony also - it was nice to have, but seemed very unsafe. It had a metal railing that was attached to the building with some thing metal wire. If someone were to lean against it, they would surely fall. Ours did NOT have a washer and dryer IN our unit, but it was just outside our door on the top level. Yep, free laundry...but be advised, it's not easy to use because you're sharing it with 7 other units - and people will leave their clothes in for longer than they should - so people get impatient and take them out - then they sometimes start up a laundry schedule that people won't follow anyways. It's just bad and you might as well go to a laundromat. Chestnut is one of the few apartments that allows dogs...and larger dogs for that matter. We were very thankful that they let us have our dog there - and the people that worked there loved her too - they'd always say hi and stop to pet her. It's just unfortunate that a lot of people that live there didn't pick up after their pets. They were trying to crack down on this by sending out newsletters that threatened with eviction for not picking up after your pets. It was sort of working, but not completely. I'm not going to comment on the walls and how much you can hear, because if you're moving into an apartment, it's pretty much guaranteed that you'll hear other people, and we did. I LOVE the area though - there are a lot of beautiful walking paths, and I used them all the time. It's close to anything you need, and i'm pretty sure it's on a bus route. Our last month there was pretty bad - as far as rent payment goes. We gave them our rent checks before they were due on the 1st of August, but they managed to lose one of them - and they didn't tell us this until the end of august, when they wanted us to move out a day before we were scheduled to. How convenient for them! Anyways, they told us they would keep looking for it. The next thing we know, we each got a letter from a collection agency with a huge late fee tacked on. When I called, I was assured it would be taken care of by the manager herself if I sent them the check (excluding the late fees) addressed to her attention. She was very nice about it, and quite assuring that it would be taken care of, but I guess we have yet to see. more
