Filipino Food: Salo Salo Grill 5/24/2006

Salo Salo Grill is the typical Filipino family restaurant. Filipino families tend to be large, so a Filipino restaurant definitely has to make sure the servings will feed all the members of the family with enough to pack in the styrofoam "to go" container. I actually give this restaurant an average review because of my overall dining experience. Salo Salo Grill is very friendly and hospitable, which is customary trait about the Filipinos. The Tagalog hits are played throughout the restaurant. It's a very familiar feeling to be inside the restaurant, because it makes you think of home. There really isn't a distinct ambiance, except that it feels like you went to your Grandma's house. The dark, plush green carpeting, the gingham green table cloth, the seats all feel like "Lola's" (grandma's) house. Salo Salo Grill is moderate to highly priced. Some items on the menu are ridiculously expensive, but other items are very reasonable. I say this because some of the entrees, like for example fried rice of simple ingredients, should not cost more than $5. The appetizers are just too expensive. You should save your appetite for the main course, anyway! However, the platters are very cheaply priced. The special BBQ and Seafood platters for an average $25. It's worth it, if you have to "blowout" (treat out) your party of 17 relatives. If you decide to try their cuisine, I think the only thing really worth your taste buds are their enormous food platters. You have a choice of beef, chicken pork and seafood platters. I sampled all their platters and I'd have to say that they marinade their meats and seafood very well. You'll never go hungry because their business runs on "huge is better". You'll have enough to eat, and plenty of leftovers to take home. The dessert menu still needs improvement though. They should really try hiring a filipino desert chef to improvise their menu. The Halo-Halo is not even sweet. If you're a diabetic, it is your haven, because you'll definitely enjoy the anti-sugar rush. You will have to add more sugar to adjust it to your own sweet tooth. The Mais Con Iyelo was very bland. I had to add 2 packets of Splenda to give it a little more sweetness. The dessert servings are large as well. You might want to split it with someone. The restaurant is very busy and the food is not served right away. It's fine not to rush because, Salo Salo Grill serves all the food hot and fresh, without the salmonella seasonings. For that reason, it's a good idea to be patient. You can order their meat and seafood platters if you want to host a party or take it home. If you don't like waiting, just call them ahead of time and pick it up. Salo Salo Grill does not take reservations. There is ample parking. You'll be stuffed to your collar bone eating at Salo Salo. That's ok, there are places to burn off those calories. If you like music, you can burn your calories at Stacks Records or at the Cerritos Mall. Come to Salo Salo Grill if you enjoy the huge family dining experience. more
