Too Much of Good Thing 5/24/2006

This little bakery is tucked off Broadway. It's located one level below street level and many people are drawn to the small spot by the sweet smells wafting onto the Upper East side. While the bread looks great, I come for the cookies. This was my treat after each prenatal pregnancy class--an oatmeal raisin cookie. I'm sure it undid any of the health benefits of my 90 minute yoga class, but they taste divine. Moist to the point of being gooey and chocked full of plump juicy raisins. They simply are the best cookie in the city. The one drawback--they are just too big. And there are frightfully expensive ($3.50 per cookie). It's challenge to down a whole cookie without feeling like a brick of butter has been deposited in your belly. It's a good idea to bring a friend and split a cookie. Which brings us to the second problem. You can only sample one at a time because they are so large, which means it took me 4 months before I had the dark chocolate cookie with peanut butter chunks. Now I want both but can't reasonably finish even one. Sad but true. As an afterthought they also have sandwiches, brioche and other buttery breads. Small counter for those who want to eat in--but it's far too warm and small. more
