I'm not at all creative. However, I had a fantastic time with my fiance playing around at the pottery place a few years ago. We went there for an anniversary, and decorated plates for each other.
There is a good selection of pieces to decorate which range from tiles, plates, and cups of all varieties to even little animals. You can decorate or not as much as you want.
Only down side is you need to wait a few days before you can take your artwork home, as they need to be fired.
For a college student, it can be a bit pricey. However, you can ask them for specials. When I was there, certain nights were cheaper.
