Free pickles from a kind employee on a snowy day 4/2/2006

One cold day I was walking through Brookline, on my way home, when it started to snow. It came out of nowhere and came down hard, so by the time I got halfway down Harvard Street my feet were wet, my hair was covered in snowflakes and I got it in my mind that the best thing in the world would be a corned beef sandwich with a kosher dill pickle. Fortunately, Rubin’s was right there. No one was in the restaurant, save the employees, and the kind man at the deli, sympathetic at the sight of the abominable snowgirl that I was, gave me my pickle for free. And then there was that really hot summer when I decided I couldn’t cook because it would overheat my already sweltering apartment, so I picked up a week’s worth of corned beef and chopped liver. This is one of the places I always revisit when I return to Boston. more
