Try the salads! 3/19/2006

On my first visit to 59 Bank, I tried the grilled portabella sandwich. It was decent, but not terribly impressive. On my second visit I ordered the mozzarella sandwich. It was good, but not memorable. I guess the third time really is a charm because that is when I discovered the baby greens and goat cheese salad. This is the perfect salad -- the greens are crisp, the dressing is impeccable, the fried goat cheese is precisely portioned, and the toasted almonds add texture and sweetness. The restaurant's hours are a plus - you can have dinner as early or late as you want. I recently discovered the brunch and I will definitely be returning for the challah French toast. The downstairs dining area is quaint at night, but seeing it in the sunlight leaves something to be desired. There are visible stains on the chair cushions. The sunshine-yellow walls are scraped at the would-be chair rail level and red paint shows through. It's not exactly classy and really makes the place feel like faux fine dining. more
