Yesterday was family day at our house and we decided to take a trip to one of the area aquariums. We decided on Fort Fisher which is just 15 miles south of Wilmington in Kure Beach. Since yesterday was Veteran's day, admission was FREE!! What a treat that was!
Walking up the front walk of the aquarium you are greeted by a large fish water fountain statue that makes the fish look like they are leaping into the water. It was very cute. When you walk inside you are greeted by friendly staff that guide you over to a wall with a fish background where they take your picture and offer the prints for $20 if you like them. We decided not to buy ours. (I hate getting my picture taken lol).
The aquarium isn't huge but its still a pretty good size and we had a great time. They cover all of the basics like having sharks, sting rays, clown fish (nemo!) eels, and tons and tons of different kinds of fish.There were large aquariums that were from floor to ceiling and it was amazing to look at. There is an auditorium where they teach kids about fish and how they live and breathe. There was a section with sharks teeth that my son really enjoyed. The best section though, was where you can touch some of the sea critters such as a starfish, sea urchins, crabs, sting rays, and a few others. This was a big hit with all of the kids there.
And of course there was a large gift shop where you could buy everything from decor for your home to toys for your child. After looking for what felt like forever, my son finally decided on a foam hat that has a shark coming out of it.
The aquarium was a good time but i do wish that it was bigger. Hopefully people will continue to visit and donate so that this beautiful aquarium can continue to grow and expand.
