Homemade, frozen goodness 6/10/2006

Avacado ice cream? Purple yam? Guava? Yes yes and yes...Mitchell's, a local institution, was opened in 1953 by the Mitchell brothers at the corner of 29th and San Jose and has been a Mission and SF institution ever since. Stilled owned by the Mitchell family, they still make their ice cream with more butterfat than the average joint and you can tell. Rich, creamy, and definitely NOT on your diet, it's some of best ice cream around town. The fact that they offer such an inspired mix of intriguing and classic flavors, is just the icing on the ice cream cake. They also offer pre-pack half-gallons, sundaes, shakes, malts, cakes and other frozen treats. One note the shop is small, -- just a counterfront and no chairs -- so plan to take your ice cream to go. more
