A lovely, delicate surprise 3/11/2006

Cafe Sabarsky has many things going for it, including German/Austrian food that is actually delicate (such an an open-face ham sandwich on wheat bread with mustard, fresh shredded horseradish and paper-thin pickles), lovely coffee and tea service, a wide variety of desserts and a stunning room. Brunch is always mobbed unless you go right when they open, and they are only open for dinner (and then only until 9) two nights a week. They do periodically have cabaret concerts paired with the dining experience -- these are quite pricey, but the performers are first rate (Ute Lemper is a semi-regular) and the room intimate. This is a great hidden gem of the city and it's a true pleasure to be able to dine in one of Manhattan's great old mansions. more
