Help those in need 1/12/2007

With the winter months among us and our families tucked warmly into our cozy houses it's all too easy to forget about those people out there that don't have our same advantages. A warm bed to sleep in, a house, car, clean clothes. ChristNet provides food, clothing and shelter to those in need through a rotating emergency shelter program. For a week at a time, churches in the downriver area volunteer their building as a temporary shelter for those in need. Members of the church volunteer their time, money, food and clothing to up to around 30 guests. The guests are treated as just that - guests and are given a meal which the volunteers sit down and share with them, family style, conversing, sharing. After the meal, often a movie is set up, showers are provided and clothing is given out as needed. The guests receive another meal in the morning for breakfast after a night spent on a cot or mattress with warm blankets in a safe environment. Volunteers stay overnight to make lunches and be available should one of the guests need them during the night. There is no charge for this program and guests are allowed to stay for up to 30 days. They are also assigned a case manager to help them re-stabilize their lives. more
