we are new to heating oil and a burnt smell was coming from the furnace. Called around 11:00am and they were able to get someone over by around 6:00pm. Agreed cost to get them over was ~$154. It took 2 minutes for him to determine the oil filter needed to be replaced. He grabbed one from his truck and it took another 2 minutes to screw it on. We then got the bill for the $154 plus another $90 for the filter. I looked into how much that same exact filter costs retail (not wholesale) and it ranges between $6-$8. I understand repair shops generally mark up parts 50%-100% to cover the cost of holding inventory but 1500% is total B.S. after paying $154 for a grand total of 10 minutes between arriving and leaving. more
