When I was planning my wedding, I picked a DJ based on reputation. I heard lots of great things about Diamond Dan, and didn't regret picking them. It took a few songs for the DJ to figure out what the crowd really liked, but he was very helpful at determining when to move on to the cake cutting, etc.
