Charleston Place hotel is very upscale and hoity toity, and you will pay for that hoity toityness. The rooms are nice and the hotel itself is centrally located downtown and across the street from the City Market. The staff can be a bit pretentious at times, and I was once asked if I was perhaps lost because I dared to sit in the lobby and wait for friends while wearing jeans and flip-flops. The staff was quite rude about the whole thing and treated me like I was a transient, rather than someone who was spending $500 per night to stay there. That day I made my decision to take my money and my business elsewhere, as I was never informed that one must wear formal attire at all times, even during the height of summer when planning to go to the beach with friends who were staying there as well. The restaurant located in the lobby is prohibitively expensive and the food quality is just not what one would expect when paying such exorborant prices for food. The chef, who is well known in Charleston, refuses to make any alterations to his menu. So if you don't want the etoufee, too bad. You'll get it whether you want it or not. I cannot reccomend this hotel simply because you do not get the top-star service one would expect when paying the prices they demand for their rooms and food. Spend your money elsewhere and stay at a local bed and breakfast or Inn and that will give you a taste of true SOuthern Hospitality. more
