Just tried out the (somewhat) new Thai restaurant in Soho. The meal here reminded me of going to fancy restaurants in Bangkok. For authentic family-style food, I prefer Sripaphai in Queens, but I was looking for something different, but not so adulterated like Vong. We loved the dining room (dark wood, with floating candles in a meditation pool), the service was friendly and the food was inventive. Some of the dishes were standards (crispy whole fish with chili sauce), others were unique interpretation of standards (Kittichai fish cakes), whereas some were revelations (fried stuffed shitake mushrooms). Would definitely go again.
I took a quick look at some reviews from nymetro.com which were quite mixed. It seems that they have had a lot of problems with their service in the past (presumably a somewhat rocky start from October?) Anyway got reservations quite easily both over the phone and at opentable.com, and found the whole experience quite nice.
