Xavier University is the only black, catholic private university in the Western Hemisphere. One-third of its approximately four thousand students are biology majors. Xavier has for many years placed more Black students in medical school than any other college or university in the U.S. Nearly a quarter of Black pharmacists have their degree from Xavier. The university also sends many of its graduates on to graduate school in the natural sciences and engineering. In addition to its emphasis on the natural sciences and health care professions, Xavier also provides teacher training through its school of education.
