malasadas and pao doce 8/18/2005

While their pao doce--a yeasty nicely crusty portuguese sweetbread--is rather yummy, most people come here for the original great malasada. Available seconds after you order it, mysteriously still hot (or very warm at least), plain- or cinnamon-sugared, filled or not, it is one great hole-less donut. I personally think the filled versions (with haupia, chocolate, or guava) are rather disgusting and overly-sweet. Sometimes the inside of the malasadas are a little undercooked--but they are no less good (to me at least). They also have alot of non-malasada pastries and cakes as well. The cakes--chiffon cakes frosted with french buttercream--are very good and not overly sweet. Sometimes it is a pain in the behind if you are on Kapahulu going towards Diamond Head and want to make a left turn into Leonards. more
