If Broadway in New York seems too far away, well, you can try the local Old Globe Theatre. Some of the successful shows that started in the Old Globe Theatre go on to become a hit on Broadway, so you might be able to catch one before the show hit Broadway. The theatre itself is not too large, so there are no "bad" seats in the house. The balcony only seats about four rows, so even if you sit in the last row there the view is pretty good. The only drawback of sitting in the balcony is that it can get quite warm there, especially in the summer. If live theatre is your thing, well, you definitely want to visit the Old Globe.
