Spirit Airlines 9/26/2006

To be honest I haven't flown with Spirit Airlines in a long time. Mostly because it just wasn't reliable enough. Spirit flies non-stop from PBIA ( http://www.judysbook.com/members/11971/posts/2006/9/464241/ ) to DTW (Detroit-Metro-Wayne) for *real* cheap compared to others for non-stop. When I lived in Windsor, ON this was great; I didn't have to travel to Toronto, four hours away, and pay international fares. But the old addage, "you get what you pay for" certainly applied here. My oldest sister travelling with her family first experienced it -- they sat on the plane waiting for take off for over an hour when they visited us here and tried to make it home. Then one time I decided to take a lay over so I could save more money and I had a two hour delay in (I think) Atlanta. Since it was close to dinner time, they gave us all snack vouchers -- oooh. Then what broke the camel's back was the five-hour delay my fiance had at DTW trying to get home to PBI. They kept announcing that they'd be boarding "in a few minutes" and when I called the flight hotline (using a calling card they gave us) it said the flight was still on time (when it was two hours delayed). Granted, it was New Year's Day so a lot of pilots called in sick and they were trying to get pilots from other airlines, but what bad organization! I want to say that the airline is much better now, just going on the fact that they went through a whole branding initiative, but I'm really apprehensive of ever flying Spirit again. Since it *has* been awhile since I've flown Spirit, they're getting an "okay" rating from me. more
