There's lots of tours listed online and not a single one of them met all of my needs. When I found Welcome to Harlem, I put everything that I wanted in the online contact form. Carolyn later called me. One of the things I wanted to do was go into a brownstone and other places told me they probably couldn't do that for me. Carolyn told me it was possible. All of the things that we wanted to see, she made sure that we saw. We were together all day--I'm still tired from walking all over Harlem. She explained things that we saw and put everything in context. I left there yesterday and I understand Harlem in a way that I never expected to.
I had heard about Harlem all my life and people have told me that it wasn't a place I wanted to go but I didn't believe them. I was surprised and pleased at what we saw. I'm Black and a historian and it filled in lots of gaps in my knowledge of Black history.
