Worst on call pediatric service EVER 11/29/2011

I have been going to this office for over a year myself and when I found out that they saw children too, I was ecstatic. My Doctor in that office is wonderful and I thought it would be great for my kids to see her too. Well my son had been having coughing fits for awhile and the previous doctor's remedies did not work. I took my son to see my Doctor at Stoney Batter and he loved her and she was excellent with him. She tried a nebulizer because she said he was wheezing and it did the trick. She told me that she would prescribe one for him at home and put the order in for this medical service to deliver it to my home. When I got home with my son around 3 pm a lady from the office called and explained that my insurance was having problems and that the medicine would have to go to the pharmacy even though the nebulizer itself was getting delivered to my home. She said she would call me back that day with the details but never did...and the machine was never delivered. At 12 am that night my son woke up having a really bad coughing fit and threw up. I called the after hours number to see what I should do. The on call ""doctor"" called back and he was very impatient and seemed very upset that I woke him. He basically told me there is nothing he can do. I tried to ask him how to tell if my son was wheezing and what I should do for him and again I was told there was nothing he could do, and if he is having problems breathing to take him to the ER. I explained that I am pregnant, and have another toddler asleep in bed and that I dont want to take him to the ER if it is not necessary because that just opens up all of us to getting sicker and I have to wake my daughter up and have her wait at the ER for nothing. I again asked him how to tell if he was having difficulty breathing, wheezing etc or if it was just a coughing fit and he would not help me. I ended up having to call a different medical provider who walked me through putting him in the bathroom full of steam to open his airways, and told me what to listen for in his chest and helped me get him more comfortable and back to sleep. They were kind, patient and helpful unlike the Doctor on Call at my actual Doctor's Office. I would not recommend using this general practice as your child's pediatrician, b/c unless you can assure that the doctor you see (who in my case was wonderful) is the one on call you will get no guidance or help from the on call doctor I spoke too. Further when i called to complain the next day the office manager was just as horrible. She basically defended his actions saying that the doctor was right to tell me the only thing to do was take him to the ER. As any parent and competent pediatrician should know you do not take a child to the ER in the middle of the night unless it is in fact an emergency. In my case, I just needed some guidance from ""my doctor"" and some advice as to what to do last night when my son had the coughing fit. If the doctor would have taken the time to talk to me or listen to me or ask me a single question as to my son's illness last night he would have been able to help me instead he was to impatient and upset at being on call and actually someone calling to actually try to help my son. And the office is too stubborn to admit their doctor's mistake and maybe try for an apology...has any doctor EVER heard of an apology? more
