My first – and last – experience with Astor Place Hair was an absolute nightmare and I will never go back! I am writing this so others don’t go through the same horrible experience as as I did.
I walked into Astor Place this past weekend looking for some nice new color and highlites for the holidays. They sent me to a girl named Noemi who as it turns out was by far the worst hairdresser I have ever been to in my life! I should have known immediately she would be a problem since she barely spoke English and had no idea what I was saying and to top it off, she was extremely rude and completely annoying. She basically ignored anything I said and kept talking loudly over me and to other hairdressers as if I wasn’t even there. I asked her very nicely to simply lighten my roots to match the rest of my blonde hair. Immediately after she applied the color I felt a weird and horrible burning sensation that felt like battery acid on my head! I told her my scalp was really burning and I was extremely uncomfortable. She said in her thick accent to “no worry, I know what I’m doing” or something to that effect. At this point I was really nervous at what the outcome would be and it only got worse from there. Noemi kept babbling on about herself and told me she was from Italy and blah, blah, blah - great, but when I asked her if she was licensed here, she said. “No, not yet, I am just practicing until I get license!!!”. I could not believe I was sitting in the chair of an unlicensed hairdresser who barely knows any English at all! I was in some kind of hell! As soon as the color processed I noticed my hair was this weird burnt orange and green color that looked just hideous! It was nowhere close to the beautiful blonde color that would have matched the rest of my hair. At this point I was almost in tears. I could not believe this was happening to me! Even after I complained she kept saying my hair looked good to her. I was like are you crazy, look at me! It looked like a child colored my hair with paint! I had never seen such inept work from a stylist in my life! I ran out of her chair as fast as I could and I also complained to a short man with glasses who said he was a manager, but he was also very rude and abrupt with me and said there was nothing he could do and that I had to pay for my hair even though it was completely ruined!
When I got home I was so upset when I looked at myself in the mirror, not only is the color just horrible but now my hair as been breaking off in clumps and my scalp is red and itchy and burning! Now I need to find a place to try and fix this mess and spend yet more money! I am absolutely going to report Astor Place to the Better Business Bureau and to the New York State Board of Cosmetology for employing unlicensed hairdressers. My husband also wants to sue them for how I was treated. What a horrible place, dirty and dingy and like a total madhouse inside with no regard at all for their clients. Avoid Noemi and Astor Place Hair at all costs!!! Go to a salon where there are licensed professionals who know what they are doing. I wish I would have.
