Sept. 2009 my wife's 2007 Volvo needed new tires. Decided to call around vs. driving and waiting. Called Discount Tire and got the price on a set of Kuhmo tires. They were high. I got the person's name and asked ""Do you do price matching?"" Answer was ""ABSOLUTELY!!! We match ANY PRICE from ANY local tire company!"" Then I got a much lower price from a company less than 8 miles away.
I showed up at Discount Tire an hour later. Talked to the same guy as on the phone earlier. I said I am here to get the Kuhmo tires you priced earlier. ""You can put them on today, huh?"" He checked the computer and said ""Not a problem! We'll have you out of here in less than an hour."" I said GREAT! I want them and I want this PRICE MATCHING price."" I gave him my notes. He calls the tire company and confirms the lower price. He comes back to me and says ""While you were here the Kuhmos got sold. We can have more here in less than 2 weeks. OR, We'll make you a FANTASTIC deal on these Generals.""
I looked at the Generat Tires. They were the cheapest grade tires in the store. Not at all in the league with the Kuhmos. I told the guy I was the only customer in the store the entire time. How is it possible somebody else bought them? He said, ""OH, the tires were being put on another customer's car but they still showed up as being in stock till the car got picked up."" I told him ""Nobody else has come through to get his car since I have been here. "" He said, ""I have explained it to you as simply as I can. We have the Generals at your price and that's IT!!!"" (Obviously flustered he was having to be less than truthful.)
So, I went to COSTCO and got a great deal on some amazing tires. And nobody at COSTCO had to tell me multiple lies.
