The Tabard Inn is one of my favorite spots for a drink with friends. It's perfect all year round.
The inside with its Persian rugs, leather sofas and chairs and fireplaces feels like a well-appointed, well-loved living room. Couches arranged to face one another make great conversation spots to catch up. I wouldn't try bringing a group of more than 6-8, since it is an older rowhouse and space is tight, but it's great for small groups. The cheese plate and a few glasses of wine are just right.
The outside patio's parachute shade is one of my favorite quaint DC restaurant details, bar none. I would go there purely for the pleasure of sitting in their garden patio for a few hours. That and, of course, the doughnuts.
Pros: Cozy fireplace, sweet parachute roof outside
Cons: Reservations can be tough
