I brought my wife to L'Ancestral for our two year anniversary. The food was mediocre and the service appalling. Although the escargot was worth trying, both of our entrees were over-salted. Additionally, the vegetables and scallops were over-cooked. The french fries were nothing special either.
Regarding the service, we were offered neither a wine list nor desert. After ordering the unsatisfactory house-wine, we were not asked whether we wanted another glass or cared to try something different with our entrees. We were not asked whether the food was satisfactory. Despite there being only three other groups of people in the restaurant, my wife had to ask for water multiple times, which was only brought to her after a long wait. On top of that, we were not treated respectfully. Like a previous reviewer, I can say that I have never been treated so poorly at a restaurant (even in Spain, France and Germany, where I lived for a time.) It was as if our waiter did not want us to enjoy ourselves or return again.
Since we were well-dressed, quiet, and polite, my only thought as to why we received such poor service has to do with our age. I am 23 and my wife is 22. Perhaps L'Ancestral does not wish to have young people return to their restaurant, which, really, is disheartening, especially in view of the disappointing food. If you are young or wish to avoid unwarranted pretension, go to one of the many surrounding restaurants.
