More Bed than ""Bed and Breakfast"" 6/19/2010

There is a fine line between quaint and creepy. The Kalorama Guest House falls into the latter category. My girlfriend and I didn't have time to go out of town so we decided to leave the mundane troubles of living for a bit and stay in a Bed and Breakfast for a weekend. The Kalorama Guest House is in a great neighborhood: close to the zoo, parks, the Swiss Embassy which has a really weird white tree statue, and plenty of restaurants within walking distance. We decided it would make a great little local getaway. When we arrived the one member of staff there scolded us for arriving five minutes after the time we said we would be there. Our room was in what easily could have been a refurbished janitor's closet. The door to our room was a bit rickety and thankfully we were close to home so didn't need to bring too much stuff, but I would not want to be traveling with my laptop, nice clothes, etc. while staying at the Guest House. I can't comment on the breakfast because the staff member told us it would only be served for an hour, between 7:30 and 8:30, and, well, we didn't get up in time. If you just need a bed for a night or two, don't mind having a bathroom that is dimly lit and down the hall, and need to stay in Woodley Park, the Kalorama Guest House might be worth checking out. The more expensive rooms are probably nicer and because the one staff person we encountered was a student, it is possible that they have new people working there now. You get what you pay for here and by the end of our stay we were happy to return home. Pros: Great location, nice neighborhood, cheap Cons: old, shared bathroom, grumpy staff more
