Best Sushi in Columbus 12/31/2009

Sapporo is actually located at 732 North State Street in Westerville in the strip mall with Giant Eagle, Panera, Pet Supplies Plus... I've been frequenting this restaurant for over three years now, and had gone to its' slightly nicer predecessor, ""Sapporo Wind"", a couple times. The quality of the food has remained absolutely top notch since the down-scaling. I've done all the popular sushi joints in Columbus, and while Sapporo definitely doesn't take first prize in terms of trendiness or looks, you just won't find fresher sushi anywhere around (and Columbus agrees with me -- they were ranked ""freshest sushi"" in a recent pole in the Dispatch). The menu has a better than average offering of traditional as well as some house designed rolls, hand rolls, sashimi, and box combos. Their non-sushi dishes are all fantastic as well - I have taken many friends and family here who did not like sushi but are always eager to return. In addition to the traditional offerings, you can ask to see their menu that they typically reserve for their Japanese clients (which they receive a lot of) - the offerings here are a bit more adventerous, but everything I've had from it has been fantastic - even the quail egg and whole cooked smelt. The wait times are definitely a bit long on most occassions, but this is due mostly to the fact that they typically only have one chef on hand. Mind you he is the first sushi chef that started at Otani some 30 years ago down on 161 and has chefed in several countries all over the world. The extra wait is well worth it. Take that time to order one of their salads, with their house made peanut dressing -- I could drink this stuff from the bottle. The staff is also outstanding. I have been on a first name basis with the restaurants' owners since the first Summer I went here. They always make us feel at home when we come in and take the time to stop by to talk us. Lastly, their prices are much better than what you'll find at most places around town. I've paid nearly twice as much for sushi in Columbus that just couldn't hold a candle to this. If you're ever in the Westerville area, do yourself a favor and give this place a try. A couple of my favorites I'd recommend: Unagi, White Tuna, Madame Butterfly Handroll, Westerville Sunset Roll, Horo Special, Chirashi. Pros: Freshness, Quality, Variety, Staff Cons: Slowness, Noisy adjacent sports bar more
