Lacking service, taste, ambience - but if you want to pay for association with counter-culture, maybe 7/22/2008

We were very excited to go to this restaurant after reading good reviews. We always enjoy trying something new, especially places that are unique. But we were really, really disappointed. The facility is quite old, with old vinyl booths, laminate tables, blue Christmas lights, and a few Mexican-themed paintings. You can see into the kitchen, which also seems old, like a greasy spoon-type kitchen. That doesn't bother me if it has great food or some other attraction. But it does not. The menu was pretty affordable (but not great), but all the notes about ""Absolutely no substitutions"" were obnoxious (it's hard to believe that this is such a problem). It's very odd that there are charges of $0.30 for flour tortillas. The salsa was pretty good, even though chips and salsa have to be ordered. The rest of the food was pretty blase. Nothing special. The beef in the fajita tasted like it was marinated in teriyaki sauce, which was odd. But the real problem was the service. Our waiter, who had 15 piercings on his face had an I-could-care-less attitude. We had to ask several times for more water, and this when there were 3 wait staff similarly dressed in sloppy, grungy clothes, commiserating at a corner table, with only three tables with customers! There was no one else there, like a manager who might care about the business. If you care about Mexican food, a good deal or fair service, try a different place that might care. If you like places that uniquely combine counter-culture and nickle-and-dime pricing, this might be the place. Pros: Salsa Cons: Service, food, pricing, parking more
