HORRENDOUS treatment of workers! 6/20/2008

Pelican's restaurant charges a more than 30% tip on the bill! The menu says very clearly at the bottom that you can choose to tip less if you would like. What it does not say is that when you choose to tip less they take the difference out of their workers paychecks! I was horrified by the things that the manager said to me. When I confronted them on this they explained that the workers lived in shacks and accused me of shortchanging them, as if they were poor because of Pelican's customers rather than because Pelican takes advantage of migrant workers and does not pay them a living wage. It was unbelievable. He then proceeded to say, ""Well, you know what you're getting when you come to a place like this."" This was the ugliest treatment I have seen of workers in my entire life. Our waiter, who had given exemplary service, looked so scared that he was going to be fired. His boss had made him feel like it was his fault that I was unwilling to tip at 30% and that I was confronting management about it. If you have any moral compass whatsoever, PLEASE eat and drink somewhere else. There are plenty of great restaurants and hotels on the strip that do not do this. It's not worth a few bucks off your drinks or dinner. Pros: Nothing is worth the way they treat their workers. Cons: Horrendous worker abuse. more
