Consumer Beware: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly 5/18/2008

Where do I begin. Although I have had some good outcomes with the many pets I have brought to the AMC, I generally concur with the terrible attitude and demand for payment that seems to be pre-eminent in the philosophy of the hospital. Once I brought in my dog who was lethargic and unable to walk properly. Only 1 year old, I knew something was wrong. I arrived in early June at about midnight , identified the problem and then explained to the intern who admitted that this was his first night in the ER since graduating from veterinary school. I told him I was a physician for 25 years and in my estimation, the dog was quite ill and needed to have some lab work done and a work-up. I was told that there was nothing wrong and that my dog was probably "tired." After reluctantly paying their fee, I took my dog to a private vet who began a workup demosntraring that the dog had severe liver problems and eventually we were back at AMC where a great surgeon Laura Ludwig performed shunt surgery on thed.og and saved its life. There have been other cases of misdiagnoses leading to the death of a 10 year old cat. Right now the only vet I will see is Dr. Macina in derm who is a wonderful doctor and human being. Consumer beware, many vets throughout the city are just not that smart and all are very mercenary with a few exceptions more
