Steer Clear of the Gator! 11/30/2008

We walked into the Alligator Grill at a time that should normally be hopping: Sunday, around noon. You know, the church crowd, the party crowd, the seafood-lovers crowd, etc. There was only one table occupied by a family. The music was blaring for a lazy Sunday, and the song was horrible, it was some mullet-rock kegger ditty that swirled along with a dank aroma. I really wanted to bolt at this point. With 2 tables occupied within a swamp of empty tables, there was a sense of stark isolation . The inside looked like a sports bar with the typical Lou-zee-anna kitch. The waiter greeted us quickly, no surprise there with only 2 tables. I ordered garlic crawfish gumbo and tequila lime shrimp. My girl ordered blackened catfish. The drinks came first and the Dr. Pepper was not properly mixed, and her tea was weak, okay, not a good start but let's stay optimistic. My gumbo arrived and it tasted dirty. Like they scooped the the crawfish directly from the swamp to the cup. The broth was teeth-shatteringly salty and over spiced, and my stomach rejected it. I immediated pushed it aside and lamented the fact that I gave my lady a taste. Her catfish was bathed in what appeared like an oil slick of marinade over a bed of rice. The catfish, ironically, like my tequila lime shrimp, were drowned in an overpowering, soggy, sauce. The food took about 5 minutes to come out, DING, can you say microwave? I forced down some of the semi-cooked, stuck together noodles and tried a couple of shrimp. It was disgusting and expensive. This was the lunch menu and we spent 35.00 (including tip) to get disappointed and mildly poisoned. To top it all off, and already feeling embarassed for the waiter, because he doesn't control the food and we had barely touched our ""meals,"" I said, yeah we're ready for the check I am full, to which he replied, ""weak, c'mon you can do better than that."" He's right, you can do better, just like in Lou-zee-anna's swamplands, steer very clear of the gator! Pros: Plenty of Seats on a Sunday lunch Cons: food, service more
