gem in the rough 9/23/2007

A nice surprise! Had heard about Gato Bizco over the years but never managed to wake up in time to beat the crowds. Located directly across the street from the Flying Biscuit, Gato Bizco is small, 4 booths and 7 stools. ""Cross-eyed cat"" in Spanish, this gem has been open for 8 years. Named appropriately since everyone that's ever worked there has an affinity for felines. The menu includes breakfast dishes, lunch & entrees with a southwestern twist served all day which means from 9 AM - 2:30 PM. The food is good and prices so affordable. The place is a bit run down and grungy. The customers are diverse. The staff is eclectic and amiable. I only wish the tattooed lady chefs who cook in view of patrons were more jovial. They almost appeared bored or unhappy to be there. Despite that the food is tasty and portions are just right. Omelettes have great flavor as did the biscuits and sausage. Orange juice was fresh, don't order a large unless you are going to share. Definitely a great bet if you're in the neighborhood. A must try. Pros: breakfast, unique vibe, value Cons: small & no alcohol more
