I had heard about Pete's for many years. I have friends from all over the country that would talk about it. I always wondered, ""What makes this bar so great for people to talk about it while on vacation?"" I finally moved to Gainville and made a special trip to go with a few friends (Who had heard of Pete's as well). It lived up to everything I heard plus! \r
It's not fancy or trendy. It is a real bar. Just like the kind my granddad frequented in New York City. Everything is original from when it opened in the early 1930""s. You get a drink and play pool. The crowd is very mixed. I sat next to an older gentleman who said he had been a regular at Pete's for over 50 years! He sits in the same chair and drinks the same drink every day. He said most of the people in there call it their home. He told me that the owners where the grand daughter and great grand kids of Pete Jensen who immigrated from Denmark via Ellis Island and New York City. They are very careful not to change anything and treat everyone as if they are in their home...How cool is that?\r
The crowd we saw was very mixed; to the older gentleman I talked to almost all night to bankers, bikers, beachbums and college kids.\r
Going to Pete's Bar will give you the same feeling you got in CHEERS! the TV show. If I had to sum it up I'd say Pete's Bar is more of an experience that just a bar. I think that's why Pete's is a legend.
Pros: A place you want to become a regular at.
Cons: I wish they had a Pete's shuttle service to get me home!
