A first date and I decided to not wait for a table at the Boarder Grill. Throwing chance to the wind with nothing to lose, we stumbled across the street and into 3 on 4th. We were first attracted by the small menu and the minimalist chic gray interior that looks like Restoration Hardware done right. Our attraction did not stop there. At first, I was taken aback by the high energy with which the hostess greeted us. This was quickly dismissed. She gave us our choice of tables, pointing out the better one. She quickly let us know her favorites on the menu. The more we talked the closer we felt to her. Excitement about food is contagious. The warm and friendly service continued with our server who allowed us to try a few wines before selecting the perfect one for our meal. She gave us hints on what was best on the menu- reiterated by the hostesses. The menu changes daily so it is good to have the inside track. We followed their recommendations to a t. We chose a combination of tapas and a main course: celery soup with creme fraiche and chantrelles, followed by incredible crispy scallion pancakes topped with dill creme fraiche, smoked salmon and roe, which were pearlescent fireworks in the mouth. We then continued with the big seller, grilled stake with a blackberry and port reduction sauce, which was off that night but still good. Following, a whole white fish stuffed with rosemary and fried. The meat was so tender it fell off the bone. The dessert we were recommended was fresh cherries in a cheesecake-esque tart with a lavender creme fraiche sauce. Cherry juice popped in the mouth. There is everything to gain for 3 on 4th. Soon, we wont be able to get in the door. The self-trained chef is destined to have celebrity status within the next few years. The food, ambiance and service were a perfect setting for a romantic evening. I cant wait to go back, hopefully with the same date.
Pros: Serive, daily menu, wine list
