Good choice for food and beer 7/19/2006

I have been to Brouwers twice, and while the food is very good, my experience is that service quality is a bit inconsistent. On my first visit, we had an excellent server who patiently educated us regarding the fabulous cheese plate and numerous beers. Though Im really not a beer person, I enjoyed trying the unique Chocolate Stout, one of over 150 ales. I returned to Brouwers last weekend, and whereas the service was friendly, our server was MIA for much of our meal. After waiting an extended time with empty water glasses and plates, we finally flagged down another employee to assist us in getting our check. The meal was quite good, though, with several in our party enjoying the panko-breaded halibut. I personally partook in the excellent mussels and frites, a must for shellfish-lovers. As Ive said, Brouwers is a beer place, as evidenced by their very abbreviated wine list. The most inexpensive glass was still $9, a bit much for average Chardonnay in my opinion. Kudos to the beautiful interior, with high ceilings and plenty of dark wood. Pros: Beautiful interior, excellent mussles & frites, amazing beer selection Cons: Service inconsistent, over-priced wine more
