Another Loss to the Plague of Gentrification 4/3/2006

Last Saturday a few friends and I decided to check out the new incarnation of a Portland favorite. Immediately upon entering it became clear that the Pearl had claimed another victim and in fact Bridgeport was no longer even a brewpub. The furniture appears to have been purchased from a Dania clearance sale, the bar is faced with uninviting (and poorly installed) marble tiles, and the sense of community is lost on the new trust fund clientele. When we finally got a table, our server was neither knowledgeable of the menu nor could he articulate the basics of the brewing process. When ordering we realized that two of us would have to eat in different areas in order to eat what we wanted. I recommend waiting until this experiment fails and they return to what they did well - providing a public house focused on community, beer and simple food. Pros: great beer, good pizza, brick and timber Cons: restrictive menus, no ambience, bad furniture more
