Nice neighborhood bar that's still trying to find itself... 10/23/2006

The old bar was called Daddy's. It had a great collection of bartenders that fit the name of the place. It had a leather curtain for a door. It was a man's bar. Sadly, those days are gone.\r \r The bartenders are all nice still, but the old guard was pretty much pushed out or fired. The leather curtain is gone, and now the generic name of 440 Castro is on the window. But the same regulars hang out there, and it can get pretty jammed on weekend evenings. Generally, during the day the place is really dead except for a few regulars.\r \r Unlike the Edge, this bar has beer busts and all sorts of events. Want to meet the SF FOG rugby team? Want to meet a gay softball team? Feel like meeting adult industry stars now and then? 440 Castro has events that will have you mixing it up with all sorts of fun, and often hot guys.\r \r But the bar is still trying to find itself. It's been remodeled, and has a certain roughness to it, and the theme nights (like beer Mondays and Underwear Night) are still fun things to do. It's definitely one of the two manly bars in the Castro (The Edge being the other one), and the two bars seem to complement each other far more than they compete. Pros: Friendly staff with great memories, quiet place for drinks during the day, fun weekend events. Cons: Doesn't seem to have a clear identity of itself, and there is a certain lacking in the atmosphere. You want it to be nastier somehow. more
