As a guy from SopranoLand (No. NJ) I declare Dagwood's Wilshire SM the closest to homeland pizza (or tomato pie, as it was called in my youth) in L.A. The test is the simple cheese pizza. Key is the top-quality whole milk cheese and the taste and flex of the crust. Key is chilling dough overnight.
But forget the sandwiches:skimpy goodies and puffy rolls. Good if you have bad false teeth.
Important to wheelchair access: though new, main entry is not accessible, must enter through a narrow, furniture-and sometimes -people-packed patio, through difficult doors, and down narrow path between booths. Last time I entered five people had to leave the patio with their chairs for me to enter.
Many take their pizza across street to Coffe Bean with an outdoor fire circle.
Pros: great cheese pizza, great cheese pizza, great cheese pizza
Cons: bad wheelchair entry, bad sandwiches, so so salads
