Il Fornaio - Cookie Cutter Italian 11/4/2002

With a menu that has remained largely unchanged over the years and that does not vary across its numerous Bay Area outposts, Il Fornaio delivers cookie cutter Italian-esque food that almost makes up in uniformity for what it lacks in imagination. While Il Fornaio has hit on a formula, there is nothing unique or inspired about its food. Discerning Bay Area diners expect more than simple Carpaccio, Calamari Fritti, Wood-fired Pizza, and Rock Shrimp Risotto. While the establishment is still true to its heritage and has excellent housemade bread, rather than innovative Italian cuisine with fresh ingredients, it has become the McDonalds of Bay Area Italian food. The wine list is expectedly heavy on California and Italian varietals, but lacks depth or any creative value wine selections. All in all, for a stock Italian meal that will be good, but not great, try Il Fornaio. For real innovation, go elsewhere. Pros: Good bread Cons: Unimaginative cuisine more
